Starting Saturday, the Japanese Community Association of Hawaii will present a new series of its popular washi chigiri-e classes in Hilo with instructor Lily Nakao from the Hakubi Chigiri-e Gakuin of Japan.

Classes will be held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the East Hawaii Cultural Center Café upstairs at 141 Kalakaua St. in downtown Hilo on Sept. 22, Oct. 20, Dec. 1, Jan. 12, March 9 and May 4.

The artist and her husband lived for 40 years in Tokyo, where they raised their seven children.

She worked for the Hakubi Kyoto Kimono School, which included not only kimono culture but kumihimo and washi chigiri-e.

They now live on Oahu, and she has been teaching the art of washi chigiri-e on Oahu and in Hilo since 2007.

Nakao said her mission is to “share this art form with as many people as possible throughout the world.”

The fee for Nakao’s class is $15, or $10 for JCAH members. The cost of the basic materials kit is $12/$10.

The Japanese Community Association of Hawaii was formed in 1971 to perpetuate the Japanese culture and main relationship with Japan through the consul general’s office on Oahu.

The organization sponsors Bunka No Hi (Japanese Culture Day) and Kodomo No Matsuri (Children’s Day Festival) biennially. Other events include: Hakubi Kimono Show, Sake, Sushi & Shakuhachi, Taiko Project of LA, San Jose Taiko and friendship golf tournaments and many others, including a sister-city student exchange home-stay program with Shibukawa City. Membership dues are $10 annually per family. To enroll, please call the JCAH office at 969-6437, email jcahawaii@yahoo.com or contact Jan Higashi at 961-6848 or jrhigashi@hawaiiantel.net.
